A lot of possibly market-disrupting gaming distribution technologies were seen at Game Developers Conference held in San Francisco. Several companies like Playcast, GoD and Onlive were some companies that brought forward some new concept which could be quite destructive for the traditional video games if found practical and functional.
A review of Playcast Media Systems set-top box suggests that it seems to do what it actually says on the tin and allow users to play high-end next gen video games on traditional set-top boxes on the VoD network.
A post on Playcast website says that the current IPTV and Cable VOD networks have touched the figure of 360m households around the world and now the company is considering offering an option to its users that will allow them to play next-generation off the shelf games just with the direct cable system no need to make hardware changes in the required network or set-top box.
According to Playcast, it has succeeded to solve various challenging problems like quality and latency
issues that were not addressed previously and all it has been done after long various long algorithmic researches that was required to provide next-generation high-end games to TV cable subscribers from some far off TV station with much accuracy. Some more announcements are being expected from Playcast in the coming days.
Similarly, OnLive has also demoed some new tech at Game Developer Conference and this new tech will allow users to stream the latest games on any system running on Windows or Mac regardless to the power of you computer.
OnLive has also revealed some plans to directly stream down games to a TV through a tiny device and allow players to use custom wireless controller aside from VoIP headsets.
OnLive users will be able to use the service just after downloading a 1MB plugin.
In Israel, hundreds of users are testing the streaming technology of Playcast and the company is planning to start a major service in UK by the end of 2010.
Many developers are praising the signs of new emerging gaming tech as they believe that it will be very helpful to eliminate piracy.
