HD Pocket Camcorders

So, you have decided to buy pocket camcorders huh! That’s nice! We will discuss about those in a bit but here are the things you need to take a note first – none of them has optical zooms and none of them have image stabilization. They’re not meant to replace a full HD camcorder. In addition to the lack of an optical zoom and image stabilization, most of the camcorders in this category do not have Wi-Fi connectivity or GPS capabilities if you are looking for any of those features.

Being said that, this genre is very popular because of pocket friendly design and ease of use.

Today we will talk about three of these. These are most reviewed and rated best among others in this segment.

Creative Vado HD (Third Generation)

This one has capability to support High definition 720P video and 4GB of video storage capacity. Good thing about the design is that this fits easily in your pocket purse or the palm of your hand. This is also easy to use with one touch recording with a spacious 2 inch display and touch capacitive buttons.
This device records up to two hour of HD video footage at 30 fps. With rechargeable Lithium-ion battery, it supports 2 hrs of recording & playback.

The addition of motion detection is a ‘fun’ feature. With a multi-function port built into the Vado HD, you’ll have added flexibility when it comes to recording and playback. For improved audio, a stereo microphone can be connected to better capture sound during recording. For private listening in a public place, you can plug in a pair of headphones. And for playback, you can connect an analog AV cable to output videos onto a non-HDMI display.

The Vado HD is compatible with both Macs (Mac OS X 10.4 and later) and PCs (Windows 7, Vista, or XP (SP2)).

Kodak Zi8 HD

This camera has following great features

  • Provides you video capturing ability with 1080p resolution at 30 fps.
  • You can upload recorded footage to YouTube with help of built-in USB and supplied software
  • It has expandable SD/SDHC card slot which can hold up-to 32 GB memory
  • It has Rechargeable batteries
  • The viewfinder is 2.5-inch. You can watch the recording on HDTV with included cables
  • Editing software allows you to edit and share videos

This is great if you are using it for –

  • Home Videos/Fun stuff with old buddies and friends
  • For work when you need some quick video that’s easy to upload online
  • For work when you need more complex videos that may require editing, or somewhat lengthy video but you want the ease of use/portability.

The video is great, image stability isn’t as advanced as those available on more expensive cameras but it is better than anything we have seen in a FLiP or other Kodak model. It does work and you can see a difference, even if it’s not huge. It’s SO easy to flip between video modes. The 1080p is awesome, but sometimes it’s nice to move back down to 720 and the 60fps to capture ‘action’ footage.

It is GREAT easy to use, a point-and-shoot video camera — but with the great lens and abilities, it seems like Kodak could have — pretty easily — had this camera competing with much higher end cameras. If all the hardware was put to great use this could compete with $500+ cameras.

Having the SD card is a great bonus. Some people would prefer the internal memory, and yes by the time you buy a decent sized SD card the camera is more expensive than the FLiP, but, the FLiP has a very limited memory. This camera is limited only by the size of the card…Definitely a positive!

Finally, I know people that are both in the TV business and do a lot of Video blogging and they are drooling over this camera because of the external mic capabilities. One reason lots of ‘pros’ didn’t like FLiP was because of the audio issues. Kodak has solved those, not to mention providing better quality video.

Flip Video Flip UltraHD

This is Easy-to-use, pocket-sized HD camcorder featuring one-touch recording and digital zoom.

It has simple user interface which you can start in couple of seconds of powering on and capture HD videos. This provides you 120 minutes of HD video with its 8 GB of built-in memory.

Convenient flip-out USB arm plugs directly into your PC or Mac to launch FlipShare software

Pre-installed FlipShare software lets you easily email videos, edit individual clips, make custom movies, capture still photos from video, and even upload video to sharing sites like YouTube and MySpace. FlipShare’s advanced compression technology allows for quick and easy sharing of high-resolution HD video in compact-sized files (via email or publishing online)
Comes with Flip Video rechargeable AA battery pack (recharges when connected to USB); also supported by standard AA batteries

Large 2-inch anti-glare color LCD screen to play back and delete videos

HDMI output (mini-HDMI connector) makes it simple to watch video on your HDTV Video: 16:9 widescreen, HD 720p (1280 x 720) at 30 frames per second (fps) progressive scan; recorded as MP4 files

If you are trying to decide which one to purchase, if maximum portability is important to you than the MinoHD is the better choice. Otherwise, if you’re looking compact camcorder with more features (HDMI output, replaceable batteries, longer record time) then you can’t go wrong with the UltraHD.
