Time and Money Saving Tips

All of us are in a habit of using the websites like Bing, Google, eBay and YouTube almost daily. We so casually use these services that we think that we are utilizing them to their most. No, we are wrong here. We do not know all the tips and tricks to get benefit of full potential of such sites. Let me teach you few tips and tricks that will help all of us save our money as well as time while using these websites.

Google:

  1. Even if you usually Google different items, you would be unknown to a search trick that narrows your search down to a specific website. By applying this trick, you will be able to search any term within a website. If you are searching for something inside a website, type your (search query) site:(domain). For example, type Andrew Boss site:Facebook.com. This will lead you to all the search results that are found for Andrew Boss inside the website Facebook.com. Also, if you need to narrow down your search even more, you can do so via this same trick. Type (search query) site:(domain)/(section). For example, type Android site:productusp.com/category/cell-phones.
  2. If you want to search a file in a certain format, this is also possible. If html is your required format, type your needed file name with filetype:html. For example, type Mayor of Casterbridge filetype:html or Jude the Obscure filetype:pdf or Whitney My Love filetype:rtf.
  3. If you want to exclude a certain item from your search, here is the solution. Type your query and add a minus sign before the item you want to exclude. Example: if you want to search for WTO but do not want Google to include results related to TRIPs, then type WTO –TRIPs.
  4. Now, let’s talk about local searches. If you are in London and want to check the temperature of your city, type “London temperature” and you will be provided with the result. It also goes well with maps, movies, time, stocks etc.
  5. Type a calculation that you need to get done with in the Google search box, and you will be provided with the solution.
  6. I hate converting currencies or distance units; thanks to Google it has brought for us an easy solution. In the search box, write [number and the unit] in [new unit] like 26 km in miles or 78 PKR in USD.

Bing:

  1. If you want to search for a track or songs of a specific band in a certain format like mp3 or WMA etc., then type [search word] contains:[file type] e.g. Akon contains:WMA.
  2. Annoyed by the distracting large photos on Bing’s background? Go to http://www.bing.com/?rb=0 and you will no more see those images.

Entertainment:

  1. YouTube and Hulu are probably the most liked streaming websites on the internet. But sometimes, we get annoyed of the streaming thing and need to watch the videos at some other time when we do not have access to internet. For such purposes, there are tools that download videos from YouTube and Hulu. For Hulu, there is StreamTransport and for YouTube there are many tools out of which Real Player Downloader is a nice option. Play the downloaded videos in VLC Player and enjoy good volume.
  2. Who would deny an opportunity to watch a video in high definition? For this purpose, click the number button in the play bar when a video is being played in YouTube. By default, the picture is set at 360p usually. Select a higher number e.g. 480p and get a better video experience.
  3. You can save time while downloading games for your Xbox 360 by doing it indirectly. Go to the Xbox website from your PC and buy the games. Download them on your computer and transfer them to the console later on. This way you can save time by downloading the games while working on your assignment.
  4. Many people are obsessed with uploading their latest pictures every other day on the social networking websites. If you are one of them, then start using an easier way. Instead of uploading your photos directly to Flickr, send them via email.

Cell phones:

  1. Mostly, websites offer a mobile version when they detect that you are accessing them via a cell phone. If this does not happen, then use [m.] or [mobile.] in the beginning of the URL.

EBay:

  1. If you are searching for an item in eBay to buy which is hard to spell, try to search it with typos or misspelling. This will lead you to such auction items that no one would have seen and you will be facing lesser competition.
  2. Now, if you are selling an item, minus a cent off your listed price and it will save you much money. For example, write $99.99 instead of $100 as eBay will charge you more for the latter.

With all these tips and tricks, you will experience the internet in a much refined manner.
