Memristor:

It is a circuit component, which was in theoretical form till now since 1971, when a fourth circuit component was founded by a researcher Leon Chua.

It has been transformed into physical form recently, by HP. Memristor is able to measure the flow of electric current.

1. It remembers how much current passes through it.
2. By alternating the amount of passing current, it can act as a one-element circuit component having exclusive qualities.
3. When the current stops flowing, it saves its electronic state.
4. It is able to replace flash memories and RAMs.
5. Allowing greater and denser memories, Memristor is cheaper than flash drives.
6. It can replace RAM chips; this way it will remember exactly what was going on when computer was turned off, when the computer is turned on again.
7. Memristor based computers will be nothing like today’s PCs; they will be capable of accomplishing way complex tasks.

Flash drive re-placer would be available by 2012 whereas the DRAM and hard drives would be replaced by Memristor by 2014-2016. Memristor based computers may take a couple of decades to show up.

32 Core Central Processing Units:

These days, single core computers worth nothing; even dual cores have lost their value since the advent of quad core processing units by AMD and Intel. It is no more a competition of greater Gigahertz. Soon, this war will increase by number of cores, as it defines how much amount of multi tasking can be done with a computer.

Both AMD and Intel are fighting each other hard in the competition of more cores and smaller sizes. The recent beloved 45nm chip is going to be replaced by even smaller sized 32nm chip, by Intel in 2009. Not only the multitasking will be taken care of, but also the size issue is kept in mind.

Intel is focusing on a six core processor which is due soon. Then, the attention shifts to core i7 which is an eight core chip. This is going to be available by the end of 2009 or in 2010. AMD is also working on an eight core project which is due in 2009. Soon after that, we can anticipate a flow of more and more cores; though the exact time of the arrival of this 32-core chip is still unknown.

Nehalem by Intel and Swift by AMD:

Though there is a lot of hype about discrete graphic cards; majority of people are still satisfied with the integrated graphics because of extra cost of separate graphics card, hassle to install it, and the extra battery drainage. Many hurdles obstruct the implementation of this technology, like a direct current version,

smaller apparatus, safety measures etc. It will take the manufacturers not less than 6-8 years for bringing this technology to your home.

Gesture based remote control:

The era of mice is ending, with the advent of gesture recognition. The working is really simple; by placing a camera on the device, and watching the user’s hand gestures carefully. This way, waving, holding and moving one’s hand in different directions will work as controlling the functions of the computer.

Toshiba has won the competition by releasing the first ever gesture recognition based laptop Qosmio G55. The brand is also working on a similar TV.

64 bit Computing:

32 bit computing is going to be replaced by 64 bit computing wholly, very soon. In fact, many laptops and PCs are using this technology.  It allows for more RAM, but Microsoft is still in no mood to completely shift to 64 bit Windows. Mac OS X Leopard is already 64-bit.

The vista users know the dilemma that OS doesn’t access more than 3GB of RAM, because it doesn’t possess more bits to access the memory. It is likely that Microsoft will adopt 64 bit computing wholly with Windows 8, around 2013. Samsung is planning to push its whole PC line to 64 bit computing in 2009.

Windows 7:

Windows 7 plans to kill and dispose off with Vista, soon. It has a refined look and enhanced security system.  It is expected that the new Windows will bring with them the long awaited WinFS file system. Other expected features include enhanced online integration, more cloud computing and Windows Live services. January 2010 is the release month, whereas a beta is expected in end of this year.
