Sony PS3 Slim

What can be better than a PS3? A light-weight, smaller, slimmer and less power hungry PS3! Sony has done it for us. The new Sony PS3 Slim consumes less power, has bigger memory, is lighter in weight, smaller in size and slimmer than before. It implies that the portability factor has been taken into consideration by Sony. This latest smaller version is one third lighter as well as smaller than the original PS3.

Sony has been facing loss since it started selling out the PS3. The manufacturing costs were pretty high, and even the high price tag of PS3 could not help Sony make up for its loss. Components that have been used in this slimmer version are small and power efficient, and have radically reduced Sony’s manufacturing expenditures.

Specs:

  • Price at launch: £249.99
  • HDD: 120 GB
  • Weight: 3.2 kg
  • Supported format: 1080p, 480p, 720p
  • Feature: Blu-ray drive, XrossMediaBar interface, Cell processor, Nvidia RSX graphics
  • Connectivity: AV Output, HDMI Output, SPDIF Digital Output, USB 2.0
  • Networking: Ethernet, Wi-Fi

Features:

This is very much similar to the actual PS3, but looks like its younger bro. we have lost the glossy looks and matte plastic has taken its place. Touch sensitive Power and Eject buttons have been replaced with physical ones. Looks are anything but stylish; to be honest. Performance has not changes; it is as good as it was before. Blu-ray drive is a big hit, but this slimmer console has not come up to the expectations when it comes to CD/DVD playing.

As far as gaming is concerned, it is as good as always. Keep in mind that your PS2 games are not compatible with this slim PS3. The only PlayStation that can run PS2 games is PS3 60GB. Therefore, think once before you plan of upgrading your PS3 60 GB with PS3 Slim.

This small machine can do a lot. Enjoy Blu-ray movies on your LCD, watch your photos and videos and much more. It is another issue that the low-quality plastic casing and non-stylish looks made us expect £50 less than current price; as it is still £50 expensive than the latest Xbox 360 Elite 120GB.

Product’s Unique Selling Points:

  • Slimmer form
  • Light in weight
  • Energy efficient
  • Quieter than previous PS3
  • HD games
  • 120GB HDD
  • Blu-ray drive
  • Free online gaming service
  • Integrated web browser

Limitations:

  • Expensive than expected
  • Non-stylish looks
  • Low-quality plastic body
  • No support for PS2 games
  • No IR port
