Applications and software are necessary for routine tasks related to viewing and preparing of documents, handling photos, watching videos, listening to music and printing files etc. Without adequate applications, one cannot perform these chores. But software is not always simple enough to use; rather lots of complexities are connected to some of them. Though they might be tremendously helpful, constant updates and pop ups are enough to interrupt one’s work.
Are their any less exasperating alternate applications? Let us see how we can replace our most frequently used software with some simpler options:
Real Player:
Windows Media Player fails to play a variety of formats. Real Player is a media player that offers to play a wide range of audio and video formats, and installs quite quickly. Apart from its pleasant music playing quality, constant updates and messages frustrate the user at times.
Real Alternative by Codec is a nice replacement. All Real Media formats (.ra .rm .rmvb .ram .rpm .rv .rp .rt .rnx .smi .smil etc.) are supported, including streaming content and Real Media content that is embedded in web pages. When uninstalled, it does not leave behind any of its files.
Quick Time:
It is pre installed in Macs, but not in Windows. It is one more annoying soft ware that does not get eliminated rather easily. Codec has again come up with two alternatives called Quick Time Alternative and K-Lite Codec Pack. Former is a trimmed down version of Quick Time that contains only vital components required for playing Quick Time content that is embedded in web pages. This software is smaller in size and easy to install. Latter is recommended to install when the user wants to play QuickTime files in Windows Media Player or another Direct Show based player.
Adobe Reader:
This is comprehensive software that enables the user to view files in PDF format. But it is way too large and complex for a simple task of viewing PDF files. Mac users have an inbuilt PDF viewing element. Windows users can substitute it with Foxit Reader, which creates, reads, edits and filters PDF files, and is certainly simpler than the complex Adobe.
Printing Software:
Printing software usually come with a whole pack of applications which are definitely not required for printing. Best way is visit the manufacturer’s website and go for the “Basic Driver” install, and keep away every unwanted application.
Snap Shots:
Snap.com provides previews, but sometimes they irritate the user. These can be rendered inoperative by visiting Snap.com. A more lasting solution is the combination of Firefox and AdBlock Plus.
Chatting Applications:
Trillion and Meebo are multi chat clients, which give the opportunity to have fun at different chat networks through a single client. This will keep you away from the hassle of using variety of chat applications separately. Trillianis a fully featured, stand-alone, skinnable chat client that supports AIM, ICQ, MSN, Yahoo Messenger, and IRC
Google Toolbar:
Many programs offer free Google toolbar installation when they are being installed. If Google toolbar gets installed accidentally, it can be removed from the control panel.
