Operating systems are one of the most important parts of a whole computer system. If your operating system is up to date and fast, you can skip many difficulties that others face. Now, Microsoft and Apple are not the only contenders in the race of operating systems; we can see some other names too. One of the most rapidly spreading and widely accepted OS is Linux.
Linux has many positive points that make it stand out from among the other new comers, as well as old big names. The penguin has, in fact, started to take place of the fruit and the window; although this whole process is very slow. Ask a software expert and you will come to know about the advantages that Linux offers you.
In this article, I will tell you about some of the most important and significant advantages of switching to Linux from OS X or Windows.
1. Do you know the cute little penguin comes for free? Yes; Linux has been designed and developed under the GNU General Public Licence which allows it to be distributed free of cost. It can be installed on as many systems as you want, and you won’t be charged a penny for this. Doesn’t this sound great, especially when you think about the cost of installing a genuine Windows OS plus all the other genuine software cost? Being a free and open source software, it can be distributed, modified and redistributed completely free of cost. All the students out there; your systems are certainly waiting for this little penguin.
2. As I have mentioned above, this is open source software. It doesn’t only allow free distribution, but also free modification. If you are a software developer and want to play with the program, you can try your luck.
3. Definitely, the delayed and slow Windows version updates annoy everyone. How long did we wait for Windows Vista (which proved to be a failure due to its slow and sluggish performance); as well as for Windows 7. This is not the case with Linux updates, fortunately. You will get the updates from the developers not after years, but only after 8, 9 months. You will not have to worry about installing the update or not, in case you don’t like it. The next update will only be 6-9 months away; you can wait for such a little time, can’t you?
4. It is great to have an operating system intelligent enough to know what software you would require. Linux does not let you sit flabbergasted in front of your computer in an effort to look into the web to find your required software and programmes. On the contrary, it keeps all the important software in one place from where you can download them. These programs are checked, so chances of installing a fake or harmful program are very rare. Also, the developers keep on updating them automatically, without needing you to keep checking for updates. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest advantages of switching to Linux from Windows or X.
5. Sick of installing drivers from the manufacturers’ websites to run a hardware? Most of us are! By installing Linux, you will experience the bliss of pre-installed drivers for majority of hardware. This is why plug and play is way easier on Linux than on Windows and X. It is time that big names start thinking about ways to improve their programs and give more ease to the user; just like Linux is doing.
6. Multiple desktops is a nice feature offered by Linux. It allows you to have more than one desktop on the screen at a time. You can use one desktop for internet usage, the other for a word document and another for movie. Your mouse click will choose whichever desktop you need at a particular time.
7. Live CD is another unique feature of Linux that can load a desktop on another computer via a CD or USB drive. A little hard to understand, but is certainly a great feature that can be helpful in many ways.
8. It is such a nice OS that has no issues and choices regarding hardware to run on. It can run on almost any hardware you can think of.
9. Linux has the least ratio of malware infection than any other OS. You can call it the safest operating system till date. You cannot get infected by malware via software downloading IF you are choosing it form the Linux software storehouse; as all software stored in there are checked and verified for not being malware contaminated.
10. If you want to check this system before completely switching to it, there is a way you can do it. Linux can be installed on your system alongside Windows or OS X. It shares files with the parallel OS and runs easily. This way, you will be able to choose the penguin ONLY after being completely satisfied with its working and speed.
11. Community support will not only give you the best support from developers, but will also provide you with latest comments from users. You can give feedback, ask queries, discuss issues and offer suggestions.
12. Usually, the developers of commercial OS are under huge pressure for releasing the updates on due date. This is because of their prior marketing and advertising campaigns (which cost them a lot). This is why; these companies cannot afford delays in updates of their OS. Therefore, they have to release the update on the due date, even if their update is incomplete. This practice causes problems for both users and developers, as there are many bugs to deal with after installation of the incomplete updated version. Linux and its developers are free of such pressure (as it is a free and non-commercial OS), therefore they only release the update when it is complete; thus avoiding post installation complaints.
13. There are loads of applications that come along with the OS itself. You don’t need to run here and there in search of Office programs, games and multimedia tools; Linux is packed with all the required stuff.
Now that you have much knowledge about this OS, you can easily choose what to do. This is certainly a nice operating system that gives you host of nice options and ease of use as compared to OS.
