Though we all like the speed of USB 2.0, but who hates a better speed? Therefore, the very thought of USB 3.0 was pleasing. Ever since we have heard about the new faster USB, we have been waiting for the time to get our hands on it. Now, it has been announced that Linux is going to be the very first system that will support USB 3.0. This is indeed a great job done by Linux.

Linux offers USB 3.0 SupportThe currently existing USB 2.0 has a nice speed of 480 Mbps. The upcoming speed giant will offer an enormous downloading speed of 5 Gbps. Seems that the name “SuperSpeed” given to it is justified.

Sarah Sharp, a Linux developer announced this news at Intel’s Open Source Technology Center. USB 3.0 will appear in Kernel 2.6.31, therefore users will be able to get this new feature somewhere around September. On the other hand, products with USB 3.0 will reach stores in the end of this year, or perhaps in the beginning of 2010. This is nice to see that Linux will be ready to support those products when they hit markets.

Sharp said, “Advanced users can always compile their own kernel on a standard distro install.” A guide has been created by Sharp for those who don’t want to wait till September. They can create a custom kernel for the standard by following the guide available at http://sarah.thesharps.us.
