So here are few lightweight tools which you can try as per your needs and make your sluggish machine to work absolutely fine.

Word Processing – AbiWord 2.6

AbiWord 2.6 is having more or less same functionality as of Microsoft Word 2003. Most of all, it is free and very light weight. It requires only 16MB of RAM, and it runs absolutely fine on Windows 2000 and upwards. In case, your machine have older version like Windows 98, you can choose earlier versions of AbiWord.

The features such as paragraph alignment, basic character formatting, interactive rulers and tabs, spell checker, styles, undo and redo, cut and paste, replace and find, image support, and interfaces are all similar. Interesting thing is that it can import the Microsoft Word 97 and Rich Text Format (RTF) documents. Along with that it also supports the headers and footers, widow and orphan control, superscript and subscript, and the newspaper-style columns. There are many plug-ins available for it, however, the support for the tables are limited at present.

This open-source word processor is a very good alternative for Microsoft word for your older system.

You can replace your Photoshop tools for IrfanView. It is an open source photo editor that you can choose for your underpowered platforms. It can save hundreds of image formats, along with the batch editing, cropping and resizing and various other built-in photo manipulation tools.

  • Video – VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player is very portable and one of the most popular one. It is absolutely perfect for your older system for playing MP3s and DVDs on any Pentium class computers.

  • System Maintenance – Ccleaner

Many tools that are available in the market for computer maintenance suffer from serious accumulation and which continuously demanding you to update and upgrading various components.   1. For me your article was very useful, on lightweight applications, since I have several computers that I have been replacing, on having bought more recent, nevertheless I believe that they can be used for other similar tasks choosing the correct programs.
