At 0.73 inch thickness and 2.9-3.5 lbs weight, the square-edged black case is the sleekest ThinkPad released yet. The only criticism with the X300 is the price, which goes up from $2,476 (minimum configuration cost). However thorough features, cutting-edge components and innovative design cannot be expected to price cheap. This notebook is truly unique when it comes to the balance of usability and portability.
Apart from the dimensions of this laptop, design modifications with X300 have been increased. This ultraportable device still involves a rectangular black casing, which has been assembled around magnesium chassis. You still get the blue ThinkVantage button above its keyboard. You also get a fingerprint reader beneath it along with a keyboard light, which is on the top edge of its display. Its lid and wrist rest involves an attractive soft matte finishing. ThinkVantage, mute and power buttons glow when they are pressed and its front edge is without any switches or ports.
Alongside its keyboard light, display bezel of ThinkPad X300 consists of a 1.3-Megapixel web camera. You also get a digital microphone, which cancels unwanted noise and is useful for web conferencing. Its matte-finish display has a 1,440 x 900 native resolution, which results in icons and texts bit smaller than what you’ll expect. You are also provided with real estate, when it comes to screen, for multitasking, especially watching video files while working.
As basic configuration, you are provided with a 1.2 GHz Core 2 Duo processor and 2GB RAM. As an in-built memory, you get 64GB of storage space, which is enough for keeping important files and running high-end applications. The 6-cell battery of X300 also gives reasonable life with 3-4 hours of usage time, when on full load.
ThinkPad X300 lacks certain features, which are considered standard on ultraportable notebook. Those features include multi-format memory card reader and an expansion card slot. However, it has features, which will be of higher importance to most mobile professionals, like wireless USB, GPS and WWAN. It also incorporates Ethernet connection, in-built DVD burner and couple of USB ports. These additions have made X300 a definite choice for use as primary computer.
