Unit Design

The El Kameleon faceplate looks blank with a glossy black plastic when audio power is turned off. Four unlabeled and almost undistinguishable buttons placed at the corners. As soon as you turn on the faceplate, it shows full colored LCD display. When you place your hand near display, it resulted in illuminating the proximity-activated touch-sensitive display. As soon as you remove your hand, this interface again goes blank in a few seconds. If you do not like it to happen in this way, you can always change the settings by the stealth mode. As per your preference, you can set the proximity sensor to always on mode, or deactivate the entire display.

The interface is very easy and stylish. For example, by tapping to the east or west skips the songs, while if you hold north or south, it puts audio into the browsing mode. You can control the volume just by the spin of your finger near the periphery of the interface to act like turning the dial. The integration of the iPod with this unit is the major plus point in the selling of this model.

It has built-in microphone and Bluetooth wireless transmitter that allows the El Kameleon to sync with any compatible phone for enjoying the hands-free calling. The caller ID info is displayed on the screen. The movies or music are paused during the whole duration of the call. It also allows the unit to upload the phonebook entries for the easy access. However, the process is very slow and it allows only one entry at a time.

Coupling the unit with a Bluetooth phone is very simple and can be done by using few onscreen prompts. El Kameleon also supports the A2DP-audio streaming from any Bluetooth devices.
There is a disc slot which is hidden on the back of the faceplate can receives various media such as MP3, WMA, AAC, and WAV CDs, DVD movies and even DivX encoded videos.

One can also attach additional 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround and external monitor to its video output. The system also allows you to assigns number so that you can arrange your speakers for the best possible sound. You can also customize the character of a sound further with its seven-band EQ.

Apart from these disc-based media, the unit is also already prepared with a USB pigtail which can read the digital music from any USB drive, any MP3 player, or an iPod. However, the unit is not equipped with a dock connector. Hence, you must have your own sync cable to pair it with an iPod. But once it is connected to an iPod, the unit can sort songs by album names, artists, playlist, and different other criteria too. One limitation is that the navigation becomes slow while browsing the stored songs on an iPod and especially in the models which is based on hard-drives. You must have to buy KS-U20 module from JVC to activate the video control. The unit can also be upgraded for the HD radio, satellite radio as well as reverse camera integration.

El Kameleon performs brilliant after it is installed. However, there are few small problems in the installation if you are installing it by your own. The sound quality is very crisp and free from any distortion. It has full 5.1 surround system starting from its preamp outputs at front and rear, subwoofer, and the center speakers. The Video playback is also very crisp and brilliant either with DVD or DivX
