As the technology is advancing, new operating systems are evolving for computing devices as well as for cell phones. The three giants have presented their latest phone operating software; iPhone OS 4.0, Android OS 2.1 and Windows Phone 7. In this article, I am going to discuss iPhone OS 4.0 and Android OS 2.1.

User Interface and Personalization Options:

The iPhone OS 4.0 has brought with it a feature named as Folders, which will make it easier for the users to manage and organize their apps in suitable folders. Before, all the apps remained visible on the home screen which made it next to impossible to find an app when needed, if the user had a whole lot added on their phone. Now, the process of making folders is so easy that the user can make a folder just by dragging and dropping an app on another and the folder will be automatically named according to the genre of the app as stored in the Apple’s App Store.

In Android 2.1, there are seven home screens out of which the user can select one according to the situation and taste. The grid like menu button is fun to use and look at. When one touches it, the appear on to the screen flying form somewhere, and can be moved by scrolling them and they move as if in a 3D cube. The Live wallpapers are another important feature of Android 2.1, though not a useful one but real fun. When these wallpapers are tapped on, they respond to the touch giving a live effect. No such thing can be seen in iPhone OS 4.0 though new wallpapers option has arrived there, too.

Games:

Apple has moved way farther with its new Game Centre feature. With this feature cloud-based gaming will evolve. Games can not only be played with friends but also new partners can be found via Matchmaking feature. Leader boards and achievements give more shine to the idea. As far as Android 2.1 is concerned, nothing significant has been introduced, which takes Android few steps behind the iPhone OS 4.0.

Multitasking:

Though Apple has introduced multitasking option with its new OS, it is still behind the Android 2.1’s multitasking feature. IPhone OS 4.0 can handle switching between 4 apps. This feature is the highlighting attribute of OS 4.0.

Business:

IPhone OS 4.0 has brought with it a change that the user can configure more than one Exchange account.

Applications:

The iPhone offers almost 100,000 apps in the Apple’s Apps Store, whereas the Android Market lags behind with only 20,000 apps.

Overall, the iPhone OS 4.0 and Android 2.1 have respective features which make both of them stand out in the crowd of operating systems for mobile phones. iPhone OS 4.0 has nice features like unified inbox, iBooks, iAds etc and on the other hand, the Android 2.1 has fine attributes including Google Navigation, Google Voice, Photo gallery and Google Integration. Both the companies are doing well regarding their competition to prove themselves as the best phone available.
