Huger Windmills: Better Power Production

As the population and its needs grow larger, a necessity of better and developed sources of energy comes up. We cannot rely on the centuries old water power plants and expensive thermal power plants. Today, the world needs inexpensive methods of producing larger amounts of energy such as from coal and air. Windmills are gaining more and more importance these days, due to the price factor; this is a cheap method of electricity production.

Basically, windmills are situated at such spots where the pressure of blowing air is heavy. Coastal areas are a wonderful example. At coasts, small or average sized windmills are installed, and they move fast to produce electricity when wind blows. As the coastal areas have almost been filled up with this method, there is a need to use the windmills at some other places. The newest info is that the coming era is of huge windmills which will be located at places where wind does not blow fast enough, but those enormous mills will be well equipped to produce greater amounts of energy.

What is the myth behind larger wind turbines? It is simple to understand. The swept area of a windmill’s blades is an indicator of the potential of power output of that turbine. This is why they are being adopted lately, to produce more energy with lesser wind pressure. A windmill is prone to produce more energy if the tower upon which it is standing is tall and the area swept by its blades is larger. Some new large windmills are interestingly large; their blades having a diameter of a football field.

This is going to help in two ways. First, we all now that most of the “Hotspots” for windmills like coasts have already been developed. Thus there is a need to build wind turbines at some other places. Second, there are countries which are neither very windy nor do they have a long coastline, like Germany. Thus, it is really positive step towards better and efficient power production methods.
