Woolworths, high street store chain is ready to re-launch online in the coming summer. With the help of Sir David owner of Daily Telegraph and Sir Fredrick Barclay, owner of Shop Direct, it has been made possible to bring the store back to life.

Mark Newton-Jones, Shop Direct’s Chief Executive says, “This is great news and we are confident that Woolworths, as an online brand, will once again prosper and quite rightly stay at the heart of British retailing.”

With more than 800 shops and a history of 99 years, Woolworths collapsed back in November. As a result 3000 employees had to go home. The name still holds a great strength and a number of waiting eyes look forward to see it again. Newton-Jones says, “It would have been a tragedy should the name have disappeared”, “It is an iconic name.”

Neville Kahn, Joint administrator says, “It is clear that the British public has a great affection for Woolworths and we are delighted that the Shop Direct Group will be keeping the name alive.” The online launch team is quite hopeful for the success and rejuvenation of the store.

He further adds, “We are pleased to have achieved a deal, which will enable the Woolworths and Ladybird children’s wear brand names to continue”.

Beginning in the US, Woolworths became a leading retailer in the UK. It had been a retailer of quality apparels, home appliances, music videos, DVDs, toys, sweets, books and alike. It had been a tough competitor of Tesco.
