New York Times recently reported that Google is all set to announce a free web service tomorrow that would allow the users to track the power consumption in their offices or homes. Such a service would be called ‘Powermeter’ and it would require the users to upload some basic data. This part of the deal would depend largely on the other companies to come up with those devices that are compatible to this web service.

However, since no other company has come forward, we assume that strange bedfellow GE would soon the Google bandwagon. This particular service is supposed to hit the market within few months. They have already created the official site for the service and you can also watch a short video about the service on that site. Powermeter is currently in the early beta stages and there is also a video about the program which you can refer even after the launch.

Google as a technology giant is not only looking forward to join the electrical system but is also going to help and reduce the energy consumption. However, Google is still expecting others to come up with devices that would help them feed all the data in the Powermeter. Kirsten Olsen Cahill, a program manager with Google.org in the company’s philanthropy division also confirmed that they would not be able to build the product themselves. Hence Google depends largely on the entire ecosystem of utilities, policies as well as the device makers in order to allow the customers to have a specific access to the energy consumption in their homes and would also help them to make a better energy decision.
