Only, you will have to remain cautious throughout the process.

Privacy/Security Factor:

Your computer is not very different from a personal diary; you have your most vital data and significant info regarding work and personal life. Will you do nothing to keep these facts safe, and out of the reach of strangers? In fact, anyone can come to your room and switch on your PC, plug in a flash drive and transfer your personal files while you were busy noting down a physics lecture or arguing with the salesman over $2.50. let us do something to protect your imperative delicate data.

  1. Go to “HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\StorageDevicePolicies”
  2. Make a DWORD value called “WriteProtect”
  3. Set thisvalue to 1
  4. You are done

Now, no one can write on a flash drive; and steal your info away.

Owner Name:

You might want to change the Registered Owner’s name after you get a used PC, as a new PC will have your name if you installed the Windows yourself. But in case of used PC, registry comes to help you out of such situation, and lets you change the registered user name.

  1. Go to “HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion”
  2. “Registered User” and “Registered Organization” values will be shown, and you can edit them there with a double click.

Proper File Sorting:

In the explorer, sorting files via filename is very difficult, and obscure at times. By default, a file named “xyz_v1” will be listed before a file named “xyz_v5”; though it seems quite sensible approach of the machine, but it might be that the “v1” and “v5” are nothing else than versions! Now! Something must be done in order to get a better sorted out file view. Restore ASCII file ordering.

  1. Go to “HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Currentversion\Policies\Explorer”
  2. Make a “DWORD” value called “NoStrCmpLogical”
  3. Set it to 1
  4. Erase the means to reinstate the typical Explorer approach

Troubleshoot Startup:

So, your computer starts up and shuts down lazily. Have you wondered that there might be an ailment inside the system about which your poor speechless Windows is trying to inform you?

  2. Make a “DWORD” value called “verbosestatus”
  3. Set it to 1
  4. Restart the system, and problem will be told.

Managing folder types:

Vista is intelligent enough to guess the folder type through its contents. “Very nice feature”, you would say. But let me ask you what would you do if you frequently download video clips? The “intelligent” Vista will transform your Download Folder to “Videos”! Do you still think that it is an intelligent feature?

  1. Go to HCU\Software\Classes\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
  2. Delete the subkey “Bags”
  3. Create a new subkey “Bags” at the same location
  4. Beneath “Bags”, create a key called “All Folders”

Network Copying takes a lot of time, doesn’t it? And I understand how exasperating it is. Vista is even slower.

  2. Set “NetworkThrottlingIndex” between 10-60
  3. Restart the system.

Relist Your DVD Drive:

Sometimes, explorer denies the existence of your DVD drive, and sometimes it refuses to accept that the DVD drive can burn disks, too.

  1. Go to “HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\”
  2. Delete “Upper Filters” or “Lower Filters” settings

It may break the application that created the problem; if it is so, then check for the updates for that software and reinstall it.

These hacks can help you a lot to speed up and freshen up your system, and give it quite a great feel. It is your personal assistant; do not let it ruin with whatever settings it comes with, change them and modify the nature of your system according to your taste.
