Once dreamt about Hybrid vehicles are now a reality. Now we can find great hybrids manufactured by top brands, which deliver wonderful performance level, too. Recently, Chevrolet has come up with Chevy Volt; the extended range electric vehicle. It is a magnificent hybrid car that can cover up to 40 miles per charge.
According to Chevrolet, Chevy Volt is capable of covering up a distance of 40 miles per charge, and this feature makes it a great choice for those whose office is under 20 miles to their homes, so that they can easily go to and come back from the office by charging the vehicle once a day. This way, they will not have to spend their hard earned cash on gasoline. The car possesses a lithium-ion battery; the traditional mobile phone battery.
What if you have to go beyond 40 miles? Solution is there, but involves gasoline. If you have to travel more than 40 miles, the gasoline powered, range extending engine of Chevy Volt will generate electric power via a generator. This way, you will not stop in the middle of a road because your battery just drained out. Though this involves gasoline, which you are trying to avoid; but tell me, what else does a hybrid vehicle mean?
Looking at the scenario with a different way, we see that most of the people whose daily destinations are less than 20 miles can take most benefit out of this gorgeous hybrid. It uses zero gasoline while covering up to 40 miles, thus it is environment friendly, too.
This car can be recharged so easily that you will be astonished at the simplicity of process Chevrolet has adopted. You can charge it at your home with regular household current. Plug in your car to the switch board out in the garage before you go to sleep, and when you wake up the next morning, your car will be fully charged with the capacity to take you 40 miles with that overnight charging. After the juices end up, the internal combustion engine comes into action, giving the car a total of 400 miles coverage.
The li-ion battery is also present in our cell phones and portable computers. There is a big hitch involved in these batteries; they worn out with the passage of time after few hundred recharges. Where cell phone batteries can be replaced with new ones; would that be practical to replace Chevy’s big battery after few years, keeping in mind the hassle involved in replacement of such a big unit. Chevrolet has the solution; it has carefully managed the recharge and drainage system. The battery of Chevy Volt cannot be charged more than 80%, neither is it discharged to less than 30% of its capacity. Both these measures result in what General Motors has claimed “a battery lifetime of 10 years or 150,000 miles without any noticeable deterioration.” Let us wait and see how true is this claim.
