As both Android and Windows operating systems have been updated with new versions; it is necessary to review both of these top notch systems in order to understand them and find out the better one. I shall compare those keeping in view different key features and attributes of both Android 2.1 and Windows Phone 7.
Personalization and UI:
The Android 2.1 has a nice menu button, which shows the apps flying and settling down on the home screen when touched. These apps can be moved around in a 3D cube style. This feature gives Android 2.1 a very nice effect. In HTC Desire (an Android 2.1 phone), there is an option to choose from seven home screens. Therefore, your Desire can now depict your inner feelings via the home screen. The Live wallpapers are another hit, which respond to your touch and make you feel the life in your mobile.
Windows Phone 7, on the other hand, has an interface like none other. Usually, it requires you to make use of different apps if you want to call a contact, view their Facebook profile, watch their latest mails to you and their photos etc. in Windows Phone 7, all this information is given to you at a single point through HUBS. It feels wonderful to view all the needed info at a single place. Windows has indeed won this round.
Multitasking:
Android 2.1 can handle multi-tasking very well, but the battery does get affected. It allows the users to handle many apps at a time, but it may result in early battery drain-out. Windows Phone 7, on the other hand, can run the first party apps in the background (like Zune), but all the other third party apps are involved in multitasking in a different way. They are suspended when another app is started, and this suspended sate is said to be dehydrated. When the app is resumed, it will be rehydrated. Bad part is that these dehydrated apps can get killed anytime.
Gaming:
Android is far behind Windows when it comes to gaming. No significant development has been seen in the Android 2.1 regarding games. On the other hand, Windows Phone 7 has introduced live integration with Xbox 360. This feature is bound to excite the hard core gamers.
Communication:
Windows Phone 7 has taken communication to a next level by combining all the important info of a contact like photos, Facebook updates, emails sent by them etc. at a single platform. Android 2.1 seems to lack such feature.
Marketplace:
Windows Phone Marketplace is another new feature that is going to give the users a pleasant shock. This marketplace will provide apps for the Windows Phone users, and this will be the only place to get apps from. Microsoft will approve the apps before making them available for buying. “Try before you buy” is another interesting feature which will give the users an opportunity to try an app before spending on it. Android Marketplace has over 20,000 apps available.
Both these operating systems have their own positive and negative points. Full functions of Windows Phone 7 will be seen when it becomes available in the market. Till then, we can only speculate.
