When you think about life in general and how you live your life, what would you say your core values are? These are going to be the things that you find inspire you, motivate you, drive you, and that you think are important or even essential in life. Have you ever thought about your career and how important it is for those two things to align? When they do, and you are working in a job that allows you to share your values and doesn’t stifle them, then it can help to bring happiness, satisfaction, and a sense of fulfillment. When the two don’t align, it can cause some problems. And when work is something that you spend the majority of your life doing, you want to be able to go somewhere that aligns with your ideals.
There are typically three types of work core values that you need to look at and think about when it comes to choosing the career for you. They are:
- Intrinsic values: these will be the things that aren’t tangible, and the things at work that can motivate you, such as how much your career allows you to be creative, or how much it allows you to give back to the local community.
- Extrinsic values: these are going to be the things that are tangible in your career, and that helps you to stay doing what you are doing, such as the bonuses and pay packet that you receive.
- Lifestyle values: these are the kinds of values that you will have and your career can impact them. For example, if you have a job with shift work or long working hours meaning that you don’t get to see your children very often, and you have a core value of raising your kids and being with family, then this is something that is out of whack.
You may have known and felt strongly about your core values for a long time, or they might just be something that you are thinking about now. Whichever you think sounds like you, you can make sure that your job is aligning with what you want it to do. So think about your current role and what it offers you. Are there things that make you feel a little uncomfortable or something that you wouldn’t go around telling people about? If this is the case, then the two may not be aligning.
It can be hard to just quit right there and then, but if that sounds like you, and you want to have a career that you feel happier and more fulfilled with, then looking for an alternative career could be just what you need. If you want to give back and do something that you are passionate about, then looking to do something like a master of science in mental health counseling online qualification could be a good idea. Or perhaps you want to start out in business on your own?
The decision to make your life and career align in values is a bold one, but it can be one that pays off and leaves you with a more fulfilling life, one that you are proud of, and one that you enjoy.
