10 Interesting Things about the Space Disasters

1.    Near about 200 people died in Baikonur Space Center when R-16 rocket explosion took place. The explosion happened on 24th October, 1960 but it was not known to the public for a very long time. It was disclosed only after the Soviet Union was collapsed.

2.    The first person to visit space, Yuri Gagarin, was died in a crash of his MIG-15 when he was on a training mission. The accident took place because the weather report failed to warn about the low clouds.

3.    Vladimir M. Komarov was the first person who died on a space mission as his parachutes failed to open. This took place in the year 1967 during his descent from Soyuz 1 capsule.

4.    3 crew members of the capsule Soyuz 11 died in the outer space because of suffocation. This incident took place on 30th June, 1971 and the reason of the accident was the defective air valve.

5.    However, the Soyuz program did not have any other deadly accident since then. But for NASA’s two of its four shuttles fleet has met with an accident which took the life of 14 people.

6.    The major disaster of NASA took place in the same calendar week. Take for example, Apollo 1’s fire (27th January, 1967), the shuttle Challenger’s explosion (28th January, 1986), and the recent one of Columbia (1st February, 2003).

7.    The Mars Climate Orbiter was crashed on the red planet. The orbiter was worth $125 million. The main reason for the crash was that they have used the metric units; however the Lockheed Martin engineers used feet and pounds.

8.    None of the Columbia astronauts survived, but the only survivors were the nematode worms, which they have carried in the canisters to study the science of weightlessness.

9.    The Italian researchers have found that the levels of testosterone in male astronauts comparatively drop along as well as the desire for the sex.

10.    The Tåhe International Space Station revolves with 11000 pieces of the space junks made by human which also orbits at the rate of 18000 miles per hour.
